First IR has long played a key role in the area of employment relations for businesses operating in transport and logistics whether by road, rail, sea or air. 

First IR has been assisting long distance road transport companies in the development of their employment relations systems for many years. It has written many agreements, advised clients on cpk rates or award provisions, and appeared regularly on behalf of its clients in the relevant tribunals throughout the country. First IR has a professional working relationship with NatRoad the peak employer body for the industry, and has assisted NatRoad on award modernisations for both the Road Transport and Distribution Award 2010 and the Road Transport (Long Distance Operations) Award 2010. Dan Houlihan speaks regularly at seminars and conferences regarding employment matters in Road Transport. 

In addition to Road transport, First IR has advised a number of private railways including Freightliner Australia, Silverton Tramway Company, Australia’s oldest privately owned railway, and Northern Rivers Railroad.

First IR has been a key player in Waterfront Reform in Australia, both through stevedoring services such as Patrick’s and PCS Stevedores, as well as Port Authorities throughout Australia. First IR has advised Port Users such as Maersk, the former Adsteam Marine (now Svitzer) and Van Ommeran Tank Terminals.

It is not only surface transport that First IR is involved in, First IR has advised Aero-Care, Australia’s largest independent ground handling company, and provided an Advisor on secondment to Aero-Care throughout their expansion process. Further, First IR has advised customers such as Virgin Blue and Pearl Aviation, a division of Paspaley Pearls.
